Which one

Questions with a right answer.

Most of what decides a shop or theater purchase is not which brand. It is what fits, what the circuit carries, what the port moves. These pages work the constraints in the order they actually narrow, and name the machine last.

Laser Engravers and Cutters · 4 constraints

Laser engraver wattage: the watts that count

Read the optical watts, then size them to the thickest sheet you cut. On Creality's own ratings a 10W optical diode cuts 6mm of basswood in one pass, 20W cuts 10mm and 40W cuts 20mm, while 60W adds only 2mm more. Creality and OMTech both send clear acrylic to a CO2 laser, and cutting bare metal past foil thickness is 1064nm fiber work, whatever the diode wattage.

Ultra Short Throw Projectors · 4 constraints

UST projector distance from wall: use the front edge

Measure the front edge, not the back. The wall distance on a UST spec sheet runs from the back of the projector, and the chassis adds another 10.6 to 13.4 inches in front of it, so at 100 inches, with the image on a bare wall, the six models in our registry put their front edge between 16.7 and 21.6 inches out. Pick the screen size first, check that your console is deeper than the front edge figure for that size, then check the wall width and the height of the image above the console.

Mini PCs and Small Form Factor · 5 constraints

Mini PC size: three numbers, and only one is liters

Mini PC size is three separate questions wearing one word. The chassis runs from about half a liter to just under three across the machines we track, and that number decides where the box lives and how hard it can work before the fan is audible. The memory ceiling runs from 16 GB to 128 GB, and on one machine it is soldered and permanent. The drive count runs from one M.2 slot to three. Size the memory first, since it alone of the three cannot be raised by a later purchase, then size the drives, and let the liters fall out of what those two require.

Level 2 EV Chargers · 4 constraints

40 vs 48 amp EV charger: your car sets the ceiling

Buy 48 amps only if the car can accept 48 amps and the house can carry a 60 amp circuit. Otherwise 40 amps on a 50 amp circuit finishes the same overnight charge, and 32 amps is enough for a great many drivers on a smaller one. That last call is our judgment, and Qmerit prints no figure for it. The charger is almost never the limit that matters: Qmerit puts most modern EVs at between 32 and 48 amps of AC at 240 volts, roughly 7.7 to 11.5 kW, and says the vehicle onboard charger is what caps the rate. Read the car first, the panel second and the product page last.

Drum and Wide Belt Sanders · 6 constraints

Drum sander size: the width is one pass, not two

The width printed on a drum sander is usually two numbers wearing one name. JET's JWDS-2550 and SuperMax's 25-50 both sand 25 inches in a single pass and up to 50 only in two passes, sanding one half, turning the board 180 degrees and sanding the other. Powermatic's dual-drum DDS-225, by contrast, sands 25 inches in one pass and no more, since its manual gives the same 25 inches for drum length and maximum board width. Size the sander by the board width you actually run in one pass, then check thickness capacity and the circuit separately, because none of those three move together.

Level 2 EV Chargers · 4 constraints

J1772 or NACS: when a level 2 EV charger adapter is fine

Buy the charger whose connector matches the port on the car you own now, and keep an adapter as the fallback rather than the plan. The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation states that NACS can be used for AC Level 1 and Level 2 charging and is compatible with the J1772 connector at those speeds through an adapter, so neither choice locks you out of charging at home. What an adapter costs you is handling: one more coupler to seat, store and not lose, on the cable you touch every night.

Robot Lawn Mowers · 4 constraints

Robot mower boundary: perimeter wire or go wireless

Choose by how much open sky the lawn has and how much setup you will spend. A wireless RTK or vision mower sets up from an app and needs a clear view of the sky, so it suits open lawns and struggles under dense canopy. A boundary wire is the older method the industry is leaving behind, but it needs no signal and keeps working under trees, so it is still the safe answer for a shaded or complicated yard.

Robot Lawn Mowers · 4 constraints

Robot mower slope: the rating is dry grass, straight uphill

Read the slope figure as a dry, straight uphill, mid-lawn best case and take it down for everything your yard adds: crossing the face of a hill, a wet morning, and any slope that runs to the boundary. Measure the steepest patch as rise over run in percent grade and not degrees, and buy a mower rated well above that number instead of matching it.

Robot Lawn Mowers · 4 constraints

Robot mower yard size: the rating is an empty rectangle

Buy the mower whose rated area comfortably exceeds your measured lawn, and pass on the one that matches it. The rated figure is coverage on flat open turf at full charge, and a real yard gives up a large share of it to beds, trees, narrow necks and the trips back to the dock. Measure the grass and not the lot, decide whether it is one piece or several, and treat the printed rating as a ceiling you should sit well under.

Bandsaws · 5 constraints

Bandsaw size: the throat is not the cut

The 14 inch on a bandsaw is its throat, the width it can cut past the frame, and it tells you almost nothing about the height it can resaw or the motor behind the blade. A 14 inch Grizzly G0555LX resaws 6 inches on a 1 HP motor while a 14 inch Laguna 14BX resaws 13 inches, so size the saw by the resaw height and the horsepower the work needs, and ignore the number in the name.

Dust Collectors and Cyclones · 4 constraints

Dust collector adapter: match the port, not the label

Match the smallest port in the path, not the number stamped on the fitting. An adapter that reduces your 4 inch duct to a small tool port strangles the airflow for every tool on the line, so the right move is usually to enlarge the tool's port or run a shop vacuum on it, and to keep a true adapter only where two correctly sized parts meet.

Dust Collectors and Cyclones · 5 constraints

Dust collector size: the duct decides, not the motor

Size the duct before the machine. At the pressure a small shop blower makes, a 4 inch line carries about 350 CFM and a 6 inch line about 785 CFM, while the fine dust figure is near 1000 CFM. No normal blower delivers that volume and the air speed that keeps the duct clear at the same time, on any pipe size. Serious fine dust collection therefore becomes a question about the impeller and the motor together, and the horsepower the machine is sold on does not answer it.
